Were you perhaps logged in using a temporary profile? This affects Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8, and information technology can happen due to latency or profile abuse. In most cases, rebooting will resolve it. One telltale sign is that your customizations (colors, wallpaper, font choices) are missing when you lot login. Does that audio like the case to you?
If not, do you know of any changes that have occurred with the computer when this change happened? Any recent software install, system refresh or restore, or anything else?

Thank you lot Shawn for your suggestion. I didn't observe what flashed on the screen when I logged in yesterday, just took note today. I received a message to the consequence that I was being logged in / continued with a temporary profile and, yep, the customizations were missing. I am in the habit of turning the figurer off (rather than sleep) each evening then that I take to restart each solar day.
Today, I have started the computer in the normal way and again received the bulletin of temporary profile and having looked at your bulletin done a restart. All the chief Apps are back (except to access the desktop), but none of my additions - Google Earth, Printer Drivers, etc., etc. I can still find them if I go searching, but non on the offset screen.
Thanks for your help. At least I am office mode there.
I will now take a look at Linney'southward proffer.

Hello Linney, I ran the UI App troubleshooter and information technology came back with the message that the Display Adaptor Drivers may exist out of date. I am the but user on this computer.
I tried a organisation restore, both through the HP Back up Assistant and via your link, but with the same result.
I wanted to include some screenshots, merely made the bulletin longer than lx,000 characters. The message was that at that place may exist an antivirus plan running stopping access to a file. I turned off my AVG, but then remembered seeing two Kingsoft programs - Antivirus and Shoujizhusou. I don't know where they came from and I can't remove or disable them equally the characters are either Chinese or Japanese. They appeared at the same time as I accepted various Windows and Firefox updates.
Thank you for the suggestions.
Each Organization has taken 45 - fifty minutes and I have only noticed that you have come with some more thoughts. I will attempt them tomorrow.
Thanks again.

And so, I swipe in from the right, tap Settings, and and then tap Change PC Settings. All that happens is that the panel disappears from the right paw side.
I tried going in from the Apps page, tapping Settings, and and then tapping Modify PC Settings with the same effect.
What is going on? I could observe my fashion around in XP, merely this is driving me nuts.
